What is an MCP server? A plain-English guide

· 1 min read · mcp, claude, ai-agents

Your team already uses Claude or ChatGPT. The problem is that the AI can’t see your own data, so it guesses.

An MCP server fixes that. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It’s a small server that gives your AI app a set of tools, like “find this customer” or “get last week’s report”, and each tool talks to your API or database.

How it works

  1. Someone asks Claude a question.
  2. Claude picks the right tool on your MCP server.
  3. The tool fetches the data from your system.
  4. Claude answers with real numbers, not guesses.

When you need one

  • Your team keeps copy-pasting data into ChatGPT.
  • You have an internal API or database people ask about all day.
  • You want an AI agent to take actions, not just chat.

What to watch out for

  • Access. Each person should only see what they’re allowed to see. Scope tools per user or per client.
  • Writes. Reading data is low risk. Changing data needs a confirm step.
  • Keys. Keep API keys on the server, never in the AI app.

Start small. Three read-only tools that answer real questions beat twenty tools nobody uses.
